Unhinged Lessons From Taking The Creative Path

We’ve officially entered the liminal space that is the last few weeks of December. Time hasn’t felt linear, probably ever since 2020, and it’s now almost 2025.

Perhaps it’s time to stop looking back and look ahead into the second half of the 2020’s, which promises many surprises. Buckle up!

In the last few years I’ve coined the term «La gente se entregó a la locura» which means that people gave in to madness, and I find it curious that the word Unhinged, at least according to the Internet (don’t quote me on that) was a word from the 1700s that already referred to being crazy, even before it meant to be off its hinges. A similar idiom in spanish is ‘le falta un tornillo’ or to have a loose screw.

Beyond the holidays’ delulu, and that desire to give in to the joyous feelings of seeing your whole city lit up at night with Christmas decor, this induced madness or permission to be slightly unhinged, might be a great tactic that we’re going to need to be able to face the reality of our world with grace.

Similar to Hamlet pretending he’s gone mad, or a great comedian delivering insightful jokes (i.e. Anthony Jeselnik), I bring you some Unhinged Lessons From Taking The Creative Path a.k.a. calling myself out, which you might find useful as well.

Less is more. The amount of bs that does not belong in your life is astounding

Take a break before you crash out. This is hard to notice, it sneaks up on you (the dread).

You’ll need to realign with your goals, aka correct course, as many times as needed. Don’t be so stubborn that you refuse to take the best path forward.

The only way to fuck up is to not get started, or not start over.

Have fun now. Waiting until Friday or someday to have fun is a sure way to become miserable. Life is not a goal you need to achieve, you’re in it. This IS it.

Avoid getting caught up in what ifs and/or misunderstandings. The ones that matter will get it. Trust that.

Being authentic is more about getting rid of the lies you were fed about yourself and the world around you than finding new answers.

It’s ok to reject, judge and feel disdain for actions, ideas and attitudes that go against truth, honesty and freedom.

You can be vocal about important topics without explaining yourself. You don’t need permission to be here on earth.

Great things are great because people are committed to putting their energy into making them great. Creators have one job, and that is making, not soothing the ego of the people who love to destroy.

Be Bold. No one ever teaches us how to be bold, which makes it riskier, and more fun.

On this note, I’m taking a few weeks to do some behind the scenes work for From Your Artist Friend. So although you won’t receive a new post/substack/playlist each week, I will definitely be happy to hear from you.

Here’s a quick recap of this year’s articles:
